Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the most populous metropolitan area in the world.
It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands.
Tokyo may evoke the image of row upon row of skyscrapers. But in spring, the metropolis offers a view of a variety of flowers, including cherry blossoms. Parks turn a pale pink, with over a thousand cherry trees, riverbanks are adorned with cherries in full bloom, and many of these spots illuminate the blossoms at night to showcase the beauty of spring in Japan. There are also a great variety of Spring festivals.
The Edo Nagashibina, which floats paper hina dolls in the river to pray for the health of children, the Daruma-ichi doll fair, and other large festivals and fire-walking ceremonies held at shrines and temples are all must-see traditional events.
